LAT Preparation: Everything You Need in One Place

Good LAT preparation is not about studying everything. It is about knowing the 75 MCQs and two written tasks you will face, spending time where the marks are, and checking your progress with timed practice.

1. Understand the test first

The LAT is conducted by HEC for admission to the five-year LLB. It has 100 marks and you need 50 to pass. Before opening a book, read these three short pages so that you know exactly what you are preparing for:

2. Plan your time by marks

Part I gives you 100 minutes for 75 questions — about 80 seconds each. English and General Knowledge together carry 40 of the 75 MCQs, and the written part adds 25 marks. A sensible weekly split follows the marks:

AreaMarksSuggested share of study time
English20About 20% — grammar rules and vocabulary every day
General Knowledge20About 20% — short daily reading, not one long session
Pakistan Studies + Islamiat20About 20% — dates, people and basic facts
Urdu + Mathematics15About 15% — qawaid and basic arithmetic
Essay + Personal Statement25About 25% — one timed piece of writing every two or three days

If you have less time, adjust the plan rather than dropping sections: the Roman Urdu guide LAT ki preparation kaise karein gives a 30-day plan and a shorter 15-day version.

3. Prepare each subject

4. Prepare the writing section

Part II carries 25 of the 100 marks, which is a quarter of the test, and it is the part most students leave to the last week. Read the LAT writing section guide, then practise the essay and the personal statement under the 40-minute limit.

5. Practise and test

  1. Start with a baseline Take one full LAT mock test before you study, so that you know your real starting point.
  2. Fix topics, not subjects Use the result to pick two or three weak topics and work on them with short practice sets.
  3. Retest every week Each new test uses different questions, so your score reflects what you know and not what you remember.
