LAT Registration: How to Apply for the Law Admission Test
You register for the LAT yourself, online, on HEC's ETC portal. This guide explains the whole process from creating an account to walking into the test centre, and where students usually go wrong.
Short answer: create an account on the HEC ETC portal, complete your profile, apply for the LAT and choose a test city, pay the fee shown on your invoice, then submit the application before the deadline. Download your roll number slip from the same portal before the test.
What is the LAT?
The Law Admission Test (LAT) is a national entry test conducted by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan through its Education Testing Council (ETC). It was introduced in 2018 as part of legal-education reforms and is held several times a year. The paper has 75 MCQs plus an essay and a personal statement, for a total of 100 marks. The full breakdown is on the LAT test pattern page.
Who needs the LAT?
Anyone who wants admission to a five-year LLB programme at a university or law college in Pakistan needs to pass the LAT. It is a different test from the LAW-GAT, which is for law graduates who want to enrol as advocates.
Eligibility
HEC's announcements state that candidates who have completed their Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) or an equivalent 12-year qualification can apply, and that students waiting for their result may also apply. Details, including what universities ask for on top of the LAT, are on the LAT eligibility page.
What to keep ready before you start
- Your CNIC or B-Form number (it identifies you on the portal and at the test centre).
- An email address and mobile number that you can open right now — the portal sends verification codes and, later, your roll number slip.
- Your matric and intermediate details: board, roll number, year and marks (or your intermediate exam details if the result is awaited).
- A recent passport-style photograph as an image file, following the size and background rules shown on the portal.
- A way to pay the invoice: a banking app, ATM, bank branch or a mobile wallet that supports 1Link 1Bill.
LAT application steps
- Open the HEC ETC portal Go to etc.hec.gov.pk. Type the address yourself rather than following links from social media.
- Create your account Sign up with your CNIC/B-Form, email and mobile number and verify them. If you already have an HEC account, use the same login.
- Complete your profile Fill in personal details, address and education, and upload your photograph. The apply option normally stays locked until the profile is complete.
- Apply for the LAT Choose the Law Admission Test from the available tests and select your test city. Read the choice twice: HEC says the centre cannot be changed after submission.
- Pay the fee The portal generates an invoice with a 1Link 1Bill number. Pay exactly the amount shown, then return to the portal and confirm that the payment shows as received.
- Submit the application Review every field and press the final submit button. A saved form is not an application. Keep a screenshot or printout of the confirmation.
- Download the roll number slip Shortly before the test, download and print your slip from the portal.
Screens and labels on the portal change from time to time. If something here looks different from what you see, follow the portal's own instructions.
LAT fee
HEC's fee is not refundable in the normal course, and it applies to one test only. The step-by-step payment process is covered in LAT fee kaise jama karein.
Test date information
HEC holds the LAT several times a year and announces each test separately with its own deadline.
| Registration deadline | 20 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Roll number slip | around 6 November 2026 |
| Test date | 15 November 2026 (tentative) |
| Result | around 24 December 2026 |
Roll number slip
The roll number slip shows your roll number, test centre, reporting time and instructions. HEC makes it available on the ETC portal, and sends it to your registered email, about a week before the test. Print it clearly. If your slip does not appear, first check that your application status is "submitted" and your fee is marked as paid. More in roll number slip aur test day guide.
Test-day guidance
- Carry the printed roll number slip and your original CNIC, B-Form or passport, as stated on the slip.
- Reach the centre well before the reporting time printed on the slip; late entry is normally not allowed.
- Do not take a mobile phone, smart watch, calculator or notes into the hall unless your slip says otherwise.
- Plan your time: 100 minutes for the MCQs and 40 minutes for the two written tasks. Practise this timing with a full mock test beforehand.
Result guidance
HEC publishes LAT results on its portal a few weeks after the test. You need 50 out of 100 to pass. How to check the result, how long it stays valid and what to do next are explained on the LAT results page.
Common registration mistakes
- Saving but not submitting. The most common reason for "I applied but got no roll number slip".
- Paying but not confirming. After paying, go back to the portal and make sure the payment is shown against your application.
- Wrong test city. It cannot be changed later.
- Name or CNIC that does not match your documents. The centre checks your original ID against the slip.
- Using someone else's email or phone number. You will miss codes, notices and your slip.
- Waiting for the last day. The portal is slow near the deadline and payments can take time to reflect.
Each of these is explained with its fix in LAT application ki aam ghaltiyan.
LAT registration FAQs
Where do I register for the LAT?
Registration is online on the HEC Education Testing Council portal at etc.hec.gov.pk. HEC does not accept LAT applications through any private website or agent.
